Gregor Samsa is under high pressure from his boss and his own family. As the family's only provider he carries a big responsibility, and has to live with strict routines to make ends meet. One morning, when he wakes up as a slimy insect, he is unrecognisable and thus outcast. His family hides him and locks him up.
Even though Kafka's novel was written in 1915, we can still relate to Gregor's situation. He feels alone, people despise him, and nobody understands him. At the same time, Gregor's sudden change can be a metaphor for a world in constant change. It can symbolize the transition from child to teenager, or a paperless refugee speaking a language that nobody understands. It could even symbolize a person who can no longer contribute to society. For young people, The Metamorphosis may be more relevant than ever. More and more youths express that they are living with constant pressure to suceed, and the number of people experiencing burn-out is increasing. Additionally, many young people have lost their social arenas as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Metamorphosis is a playful horror-theatre for children from age 10, based on the novel with the same name by Franz Kafka.
