Ellisif Wessel - Den sterke viljen (Ellisif Wessel - The strong will)

Produced by Samovarteateret (2016)
In cooperation with Sør-Varanger Kultursal
Ellisif Wessel (1866 – 1949) is one of the most memorable, but still unknown, women in Norwegian history. The year 2016 marks 150 years since her birth. For most of her adult life, Ellisif lived in Kirkenes, where her never-ending activities became an important drive force to create a better and more just society. This happened in a time before women in Norway gained the right to vote, and where many in the north still lived in turf huts.
It is important to tell the story about Ellisif, her involvement and her strong voice today. It might be more important than ever, as the class differences in the world are growing. In Norway, we have many opportunities to use our voices and participate in society. Still, the election turnout is sinking. Have we become apathetic to what is happening, are we closing our eyes to the injustice of the world? Or does social engagement and solidarity still exist among us? Does an Ellisif exits today? The story of Ellisif Wessel shows that caring for others, getting involved and standing up for what you believe in matters. When Ellisif got so much done during her time - imagine what a person could do today!
"Above all, show respect for every human being, a deep love for them, a thirst for justice, clarity in the face of injustice, and profound remorse over it — all of this carried from the heart and into life, in every single way it can be expressed"
