The Samovar Kids

Since 1991, Samovarteateret has facilitated Northern Norway's oldest professional theatre school for children and teens. Through 35 years, 90 productions, approximately 4,000 pupils between the ages of 6-19 have been part of “The Samovar Kids” (Samovarongan). The theatre education is a collaboration between the municipal Sør-Varanger Cultural School and Samovarteateret, and is an important leisure activity in the local community.

About the teaching:

The teaching is based on Samovarteateret's own theatre pedagogy; a mixture of classical acting technique, combined with autodidactic techniques and methods developed through many years of experience as actors and educators. The teaching is group and production-based, with annual performances and work reviews as learning platforms. Here students learn theatre craft and discipline and become part of a larger theatre community.

Samovarongan is about building healthy temas that work well together, in a safe and creative environment, where we value both personal growth and co-creation. Through the class, theatre pupils develop personal skills such as courage and confidence, imagination and creativity, as well as collaboration, empathy and mutual respect. We emphasize personal as well as professional development for each theatre student. The teaching is tailored from year to year, based on the different students and cohort as a whole, with goals and challenges adapted to each individual student and group.

We work with various dramatic material; from classics by Shakespeare, Brecht, Ibsen, Pinter, Roald Dahl, H.C. Andersen to self-produced, original scripts. Stage productions often include different disciplines and artistic expressions from Sør-Varanger Cultue School. All of Samovarteateret's employees and project participants (actors, dancers, choreographers, instructors, technicians, etc.) are at times involved with the pupils and teaching, and help with performances and productions.
